Project Spotlight: Cedar Horizontal Board and Batten Privacy Fence

We are proud and excited to showcase what is one of the very few horizontal board and batten privacy fences that Frederick Fence has ever installed! The difficulty level of this particular privacy fence example is greater than a standard horizontal board fence style and must be done with significant attention to detail. We knew right away that Joel and his team were the ones to pull off this complicated installation. We think it turned out beautifully for this client in Montgomery County, MD!

The Client

For this privacy fence example we worked with the builder who was contracted to build a custom home for this resident in Bethesda, MD. The homeowner specifically requested the horizontal board and batten style, having seen it on the internet and determined that it would tie in well with the custom aspects of their new home. Brody Barger was the Fence Co. sales representative who took the measurements, provided wisdom and suggestions, and ultimately sold the project.

“These custom plan/design/build projects always bring new and interesting challenges for our company to meet. The customer had a very specific vision for the project that we were able to bring to life for them. As long as the budget accommodates the skill required, there is not much we aren’t able to do for our customers. ”

The Material

This featured fence is constructed out of high quality western red cedar that Frederick Fence normally stocks, aside from the cap boards which we custom milled using raw stock from Oregon. All posts are pressure treated pine to ensure the fence has structural integrity and longevity. The boards that form the base of the board and batten style are 1×6’s, and the battens are 1×4’s. Some finishing details on this fence include fascia boards installed over each post and a cap board that runs along the top. Each gate is solid board cedar, framed with additional cedar boards to provide a more finished look.

Western red cedar is an ideal material for fencing because it is resistant to warping and twisting, lightweight, resistant to rot, and long-lasting.

The Installation

Horizontal board privacy fences are mainly ideal for yards that are straight and flat, but it is possible to install them in a “stepped” fashion on a slope. “Stepped” means that each fence section is built so that the top is level but installed either higher or lower than the section next to it. This is in contrast to a “sloped” fence that angles up and down as it follows the grade. Usually when installing a horizontal board fence that is stepped, there will inevitably be gaps under the bottom boards where the fence cannot meet the grade. This presents a problem if the fence is meant to keep animals in or out. On this board and batten project, however, the installers took smaller pieces of board and filled in some of the gaps, allowing it be functional as well as beautiful.

In our privacy fence example notice the beautiful red color of the western red cedar next to the neighboring pressure treated solid board fence.
