Do I need a Permit for My Fence in Washington County?

Properties located in Washington County alone do not need a permit for the construction of a fence. However, some towns within the County do require a permit. Applications can be found on each municipality’s website, but in order to obtain the most up-to-date information about zoning requirements and fees, we recommend contacting your local government office via phone. Ask for the planning/zoning department if the option is given. Applications can usually be submitted via email. Some municipalities are able to accept credit card payments, but others require payment in the form of a check or cash.

There are not many towns within the County that require a fence permit. A $45 building permit is required for fences in the City of Hagerstown. Additional review and approval are needed for properties located within its historic district. A permit is required in Boonsboro only if a fence exceeds 6’ in height. The Town of Keedysville requires a $20 fence permit. This is not an exhaustive list by any means. We recommend doing your own research of your local government before constructing a fence.
