What Height is Right?

If you are considering how tall your fence should be, the information we have compiled here is for you. There are many variables that go into choosing the perfect fence height for each homeowner. There is no “one size fits all,” unless you are regulated by community rules or pool code. Even then, there are usually a few options you can choose from. Let us walk you through some of the factors you should consider when choosing a height for your fence!

HOA regulations

Most communities with homeowners’ associations have a general height regulation, or maybe even only two fence height options to choose from. Read through your HOA’s fence requirements to learn what options are available to you. You can also use other properties in your neighborhood as a guide. Many times, your Fence Co. sales representative will already know what the regulations are from their past experience with the neighborhood. We try to make the HOA approval process easier for you when we can.

County/municipality regulations

Some governing entities limit the height of fencing to 8’ or 6’. Height is even more restricted in front yards in many cases. For example, the City of Rockville limits fence height to 4’ tall in front yards, but you can have a fence as tall as 8’ in the side and rear yards. Frederick City does not allow fencing in front yards at all. Corner properties in any county have more trouble with fencing near roads where there might be site distance concerns for drivers.

You can contact your local town, city, or county office and ask for the zoning department to learn more about what fencing heights are allowed in your area. They also have resources available online to help guide you when it comes to zoning regulations.

Purpose for fencing

The purpose of your new fence is one of the main determinants of its height.

Pool– Pool code requires fencing to be at least 4’ or 5’ tall, depending on where you live. You are welcome to go taller, such as if you wish to have privacy surrounding your pool or to deter deer from entering the area.

Boundary– The goal of creating a boundary or showing where property lines begin and end can be accomplished with a simple 2-3′ tall fence.

Privacy– Standard privacy fences in all areas are 6’ tall. This does not mean you cannot go higher if you wish. Just be sure to check your HOA and government regulations first.

Security– We recommend going as tall as you can with fencing meant to provide security. Security fences for commercial properties are standard at 7′ and 8’ tall. Barbed wire extensions are usually added to deter climbing.

Pets– We usually consider 4’ tall fencing sufficient for dog fencing. If your dog is extra athletic and can jump high, consider going to 5’ tall. If you have very small animals, consider focusing on narrower spacing rather than a specific height.

Pests– Fences that keep deer out of your yard must be 8’ tall. Deer can easily jump over anything shorter.

Cost

Fences that are taller should be more expensive, and that is usually the case across the board. However, some fence styles can be a bit cheaper when they are taller. The universal standard height for privacy fencing is 6’ tall. If a vinyl fence has to be cut down to 5’ tall, that takes more labor. Check with your fence company to see if they establish pricing this way. The time of year and the current material prices can also change that fact.
