Comparing Similar Fence Styles in Wood Vs. Vinyl Material

Board on Board or Board and Batten

Two of the most common styles of wood privacy fencing are board on board or shadowbox fencing, and board and batten. Both options feature the appearance of alternating or overlapping boards, however board on board allows you to see through the fence when looking at an angle. When looking straight on, the fence appears to be completely closed. Board and batten style has boards that overlap so that you have complete and guaranteed privacy.

We do not offer a board-on-board style fence in vinyl material. We can offer a semi-private vinyl option that might work as an alternative. Pictured below, the picket spacing on this beige vinyl fence is very narrow, but not totally closed and private like tongue and groove privacy

Solid Board/Tongue and Groove

Another popular wood privacy fence style is solid board. Vertical boards are installed in one row along the fence. One side shows the supporting runner across the middle while the other side (known as the beauty side) does not. This fence can be framed with trim boards and capped with a cap board or not.

The Vinyl version of this fence is called tongue and groove privacy because the vertical boards interlock with each other. Vinyl privacy fencing has a beauty side on both sides because there is no need to have a supporting middle runner.

Both wood and vinyl privacy fencing in these different styles can have lattice or spindles added to the top for decoration.

Picket

Picket fencing comes in all sizes and shapes in both wood vs vinyl fencing. Wood generally has more flexibility when it comes to picket size and shape, but height is completely customizable in both material options. Classic pickets are thinner, and square-shaped, and contemporary pickets are the wider picket option. Arch top and dip top styles are also available in both wood vs vinyl fencing.

Paddock/Ranch

Wood fences in this style are called paddock fences. In vinyl, they are known as ranch-style fences. Choose a difference fence style that works for you, anything from two-board to six-board. Five and six-board paddock fences are more commonly constructed out of wood. Customers usually choose between two and four-board ranch fences when choosing vinyl material. Wire can be added to either style to add security for pets, children, or pool areas.

Estate

Similar to the paddock and ranch fences, estate fences can be either wood or vinyl. Estate fencing is slightly more decorative than paddock fences and are usually chosen for that purpose over pure functionality.

Pergola/Trellis

Frederick Fence offers a variety of pergola kits you can have installed with your fence or as a standalone. Wood pergolas require a square structure almost all the time, but vinyl can be manufactured in a rounded design. Wood lattice work is popular on pergolas when being used as a trellis. See the many examples of pergolas and trellises we have installed in recent years!

Price Comparison

If you simply wish to go with the most affordable material, your sales representative can price up both options for you in any given style.  It may seem obvious that vinyl would be the more expensive option, but wood prices have risen to a place where that is not always the case. The price may also be so similar that you will be obtaining a much better value with vinyl.
